Rob Gronkowski, commonly referred to as simply “Gronk”, has been known to be quite a character. Legendary head coach Bill Belichick described him as a “shot in the dark” when they chose to take him in the 2nd round of the 2010 NFL draft. During his first official visit and meeting with the coaches of the Patriots, he fell asleep on the floor of the meeting room. Belichick said it “didn’t make a good impression” and spoke of his underwhelming college career. Gronkowski did not start his freshman year, had a “decent” sophomore year catching 30 passes, then missed his whole junior season due to a back injury. He would then choose to forgo his senior year to enter the NFL draft.
However, as many know, after a legendary eleven-year career, he is now widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time. Throughout his career, much like in his transition from college to the NFL, has always surpassed what people assumed of him. He has shown that he has an intelligent and thoughtful side of himself, while also holding a whimsical persona. Belichick summed up Gronk’s spirit well, “There wasn’t much to go on… we just kind of bet that he would come through and he certainly did big time.” This excellence applied to his off-field endeavors as well.
Throughout both his playing and retired career, Gronk has been using his platform to spread childhood cancer awareness. Through multiple different charity events and organizations, Gronk has been getting his hair buzzed in support of Cancer Patients. As early as 2014, he participated in the Buzz for Kids cancer charity event, a program devoted to providing financial relief for suffering families’ high treatment costs.
This year, Gronk continued this tradition by joining his former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their event with a similar spirit, Cut for a Cure. The event was community-oriented. The team invited local families affected by cancer to Tampa Bay’s state-of-the-art indoor facility. Here, kids interacted with and shaved Buccaneers players’ heads. Current big-name players like receiver Mike Evans and safety Antoine Winfield Jr participated along with former Bucs legends Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber, and Dexter Jackson. Cut for a Cure has raised over 700,000 dollars for cancer research in its 10 years of being hosted by the Bucs. Beyond its direct funding contributions, the event also spreads awareness through community impressions and social media posts by players and the team. Gronk posted on his Instagram a heartfelt caption: “Anything for the kids so they can live their best life. That’s how it should be for these kids! Just like I grew up, free and wild, almost so free people wanted me in jail as a kid! Hehe.”
Gronk credits his athleticism with his brotherly and tight-knit upbringing. All five of the Gronkowski boys would go on to be professional athletes. He noted his lucky and opportunity-filled childhood, "I remember having everything accessible to me. If we wanted to play in the backyard, we could. If we wanted to play in a park, we could. If we wanted to play in a baseball league, our parents could sign us up and we could play in a baseball league. I just felt like it was definitely an advantage to have all the tools and all the equipment growing up to help lead me down a successful path." By recognizing the value of such provisions, he decided he wanted to provide other less fortunate children with the same opportunities that he had to succeed.
Gronk started by frequently donating to youth football programs and children’s hospitals. He then realized that he wanted to cover more ground stating, “Why don't I start my own foundation to help less fortunate kids that don't have the opportunities I had growing up?”
Gronk joined his brothers and father, Gordy Gronkowski, to create the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation. The new charity would serve as a platform to give grants to youth programs in need and host camps and visits by the Gronkowski’s to promote and inspire sports.
Gronk’s devotion to serving his community came through once again. The equipment storage section of Blake High School in Tampa Florida had burned down. The Gronk Nation Foundation instantly intervened and replaced all of the school's equipment and built a new shed.
Rob Gronkowski’s acts in philanthropy show that no person is too famous or busy to not act to help others. The Blake High School relief program occurred during his busy training camp, but he still took the initiative to change his community. He also rose above the image that the media had of him as a simple jock, showing that assumptions are not always accurate. Gronk’s introspective and selfless spirit serve as an example for NFL players and all people in positions that are able to give.
